Climate First Bank is a values-driven FDIC-insured digital community bank founded to combat the climate crisis and support communities through environmental, educational, and philanthropic initiatives. To support this mission, the Bank has provided numerous internships for college students across various departments, including marketing, information technology, project management and more.

Meet Mei Mei Whelchel. Mei Mei is a senior at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, majoring in Environmental Studies and minoring in Economics.

"I've come to understand the magnitude of power and influence that finance and investments have on shaping the world around us. So, I was drawn to Climate First Bank because I think the Bank is tapping into this power, harnessing it, and redirecting it towards doing good without making people compromise on service or accessibility. I honestly think it's a brilliant model." Mei Mei said.

Mei Mei joined the Bank in the Summer of 2024 as a Project Management Intern. She has been working under Adam Webman, VP Director of Strategic Projects. She's had a key role in refining our website user experience, writing and designing the Bank's annual Impact Report, coordinating the Bank's regular Fireside Chats, and more.

"The project that I am most proud of is the models I drafted to help improve the user experience on our website. I wholeheartedly believe in what the Bank is doing for communities and the environment, so I am motivated to help clearly communicate the Bank's mission, values, and products. Clearly communicating our mission means we'll reach anyone who would like to be a part of the movement to use their finances as a tool for change, and they'll be able to discover our products and services more easily." Mei Mei explained.

In her free time, Mei Mei enjoys staying active and learning.

"I like to dance, do yoga, and run. I also really like learning outside of school settings, for instance, going to museums, listening to podcasts or reading. And then, of course, I love just being with family and friends," Mei Mei said.

Mei Mei’s goal is to make the world a better place through finance… A mission we can wholeheartedly relate to.

"I am interested in dedicating my career to bringing about positive social and environmental change through finance, so this internship with the Bank is right up my alley!" Mei Mei explained.
